I recently needed a menu with a bar/graphic that would slide around using some sort of animated affect. This had been specifically requested by my customer.
These types of menu have become known as "LavaLamp" menus because the hover state background moves and "stretches" a bit like the lava in a lavalamp.
I knew there was a mootools one which worked nicely by itself, but the site I wanted to put it on already had other jQuery effects going on, so I was hoping to use the jQuery library I already had loaded on my site.
Sure enough I found a jQuery LavaLamp plugin. It worked very nicely alongside my other jQuery effects and was easy to integrate.
Below is an example of the LavaLamp menu in action. The full version has a vertical version too:
